Award acceptance speech examples

An acceptance speech is mostly thank-yous. Thank the people who picked you and the people who helped you get there. Then sit down while they're still clapping.

A chatbot can write an acceptance speech in seconds. It doesn't know who covered for you the month the project nearly sank, and it won't be the one walking up to the microphone. The speeches below are made up, so keep their shape and fill in your own people. First comes a template. Then come speeches for employee of the year, a team award, a small business award and a volunteer award. After those are a short one, a funny one and one to give for a winner who couldn't be there. Last: what to say when you didn't see it coming, how long to talk, what to leave out and how to give it.

An award acceptance speech template

Examples 1 to 4 below follow all five beats, and example 5 trims them to three. Fill in the blanks, then cut any line that sounds like a press release.

  1. Thank whoever gave you the award, by name if you can: "Thank you, ___, and thank you to ___ for this."
  2. Tell one short story about the work, or say in a sentence what it means to you: "When I started here, I ___."
  3. Share the credit. Name a few people who helped, then thank the rest as a group: "I didn't do this alone. ___, thank you for ___. And to everyone on ___: this is yours too."
  4. Say who the work is for, or what you'll do next: "We do this for ___." Or: "Next year, I want to ___."
  5. End with one more thank-you: "Thank you."

Beat three matters most to the people in the room. Write the names on a card, even the ones you know by heart.

7 award acceptance speech examples

The names and stories are made up. Each one runs under 150 words, about a minute out loud.

1. Employee of the year

It fits any award at work, like a recognition award or a sales award.

Thank you, Linda, and thank you to everyone who voted. I honestly thought I was here for the free dinner.

When I started in the warehouse four years ago, I couldn't drive a forklift. Marcus taught me on his lunch breaks for two weeks, and he never once made me feel slow. Most of what I know about this job, I learned from somebody in this room.

So I want to thank a few of them. Marcus, for the forklift and everything after it. Denise, for moving me to the night crew when I asked for a shot. And to the whole night crew: you know how many nights this year came down to the last truck. This award is as much yours as mine.

Next year, I'm going to try to be somebody's Marcus.

Thank you.

2. A team award, accepted for the team

When the award goes to a team, whoever accepts it gives the credit away. With a small team, name everyone and ask them to stand. With a big one, skip the names and ask the whole team to stand.

Thank you to the awards committee, and to Raj for those kind words.

A year and a half ago, our team took over a customer portal that crashed almost every Monday morning. Support had a name for it: the Monday problem. It hasn't gone down once in the last six months, and that's because six people refused to let it go.

I'm only up here because somebody has to carry the plaque. Jen, Carlos, Mei, Tyler, Amara and Ben, would you stand up? These are the people who fixed it, one bug at a time. Most of those fixes, nobody outside our team ever saw.

We did it for the people who log in on Monday mornings to pay their bills. Now they never have to think about us.

Thank you.

3. A small business award

For an owner accepting a local business award, like one from a chamber of commerce. Thank your customers and your staff.

Thank you to the Riverside Chamber of Commerce, and to whoever nominated us. My husband is filming this from the back, so I'll try not to cry.

We opened Hollis Street Bakery six years ago with one oven and a loan from my sister. The first winter, we almost closed. Then a few of you started buying our bread for your restaurants, and you told your friends. Some of you are here tonight. You kept us open.

I also want to thank our team. Rosa has been with us since the one-oven days, and she still gets in at four every morning. All twelve of you are the reason people come back.

Riverside has been good to us. We plan to keep baking for it as long as you'll have us.

Thank you.

4. A volunteer award

For a community or nonprofit award. Keep the spotlight on the people the work is for.

Thank you to the Eastside Food Bank's board, and to Carol for the introduction.

Nine years ago, my daughter needed volunteer hours for school, so I drove her here on a Saturday morning. She finished her hours in a month. I never left.

To the Saturday crew, and to Gail, Ron and Teresa most of all: thank you. You show up at seven every week to sort cans in a cold warehouse. Ron complains the whole time, but he still sorts faster than anyone.

What keeps me coming back is the line outside the door at eight. Some of those families have been coming as long as I have, and a few of them now volunteer right next to me.

Thank you. I'll see you all Saturday.

5. Short and simple

About 40 words, under 20 seconds. Use it when the ceremony hands out a lot of awards, or for employee of the month at a team meeting.

Thank you, Paul, and thank you to everyone who voted. I wouldn't be up here without Ana and Josh, who answered every question I had my first year. This one belongs to the whole front desk. Thank you.

6. A funny one

Aim the jokes at yourself, since the other nominees and the judges are sitting right there.

Thank you so much. I wrote two speeches for tonight, one for winning and one for losing gracefully. The losing one was a lot longer, so you got lucky.

My first week on the sales team, I called a customer who had already canceled. Nobody told me, so I talked for twenty minutes. He renewed just to get off the phone. My manager Theo said that wasn't a sales technique. Then he spent the next year teaching me some real ones.

Theo, thank you. And thank you to the whole team. Maya, you've heard me practice every pitch I've ever given. Out loud. In the car. Sorry, Maya.

To the other nominees: you had a great year, and I'll see you back here next year.

Thank you.

7. On behalf of someone else

Say who you are and why the winner is away. If they sent a few lines, read them word for word. Add one line of your own and stop. If they sent nothing, thank the organizers for them and say one thing about why they won.

Good evening. I'm Daniel, and I've worked with Dr. Elena Ruiz for eight years. She's sorry she can't be here tonight. She's in Kenya with our clinic team, and if you know Elena, you know that's where she'd rather be.

She asked me to read this: "Thank you to the Association for this honor. It belongs to the nurses and community health workers who run our clinics every day, and to the families who trust them. I'm proud to work beside them."

I'll add one thing. In eight years, I've never seen Elena take credit for anything. So I'm going to bring this back to the clinic and hang it where she has to look at it.

Thank you.

What to say if you didn't expect to win

Sometimes you find out when they read your name. Nobody expects a speech from someone who didn't know. Say three things: thank you, one person's name and thank you again.

Wow. Thank you. I really didn't see this coming. Jamie, half of this is yours. Thank you, everyone.

That takes about ten seconds. If you're nominated at all, write your own version in your phone before the event, just in case. Impromptu speaking has more on talking with no warning.

How long should an acceptance speech be?

Ask the organizer how long you have. If nobody gives you a number, keep it under a minute at a ceremony with lots of awards. When yours is the main award of the night, two or three minutes is plenty. Time it standing up and out loud, since that's how you'll give it.

If it runs long, cut the story before you cut the thank-yous.

Rehearse your acceptance speech with an AI coach in Charisma Lab

Charisma Lab is a speaking coach on your iPhone. In Speak, tap the center and tell the coach you're practicing an award acceptance speech. Say it out loud one chunk at a time, like the opening thank-you, the story or the names. A pause of about two seconds ends a take, so end each chunk where you'd look up from your card. You hear the take played back, then the coach tells you what to fix and sends you back in.

To hear the whole speech first, open Voice Cam on the home screen and record it, with the camera or audio only. Each recording runs up to a minute, which fits a short acceptance speech, so record a longer one in parts. As you talk, it shows your volume, pitch and pauses, plus an estimate of your pace in words per minute. Check that your pace stays steady when you reach the names. Setup is free and includes a short live session with the coach. After that, the app needs Pro, which is $14.99 a month in the US. See pricing.
