WEDDINGS

Maid of honor speech examples

These five speeches are made up, so take their shape and leave their stories. The room is full of people who know the bride, and they want to hear yours.

A chatbot can draft a maid of honor speech before your coffee cools. It has never met the bride, though, and it won't be the one holding the microphone. Below is a template, then five example speeches. Three are for a younger sister, an older sister and a best friend. The last two are a short one and a funny one. After them come how long to talk, what to leave out and how to give it.

A maid of honor speech template

All five examples follow the same five beats. Fill in the blanks, then rewrite anything you wouldn't say to the bride's face.

  1. Say who you are and thank the hosts: "Good evening, everyone. I'm ___, ___'s sister (or friend from ___). Thank you to ___ for tonight."
  2. Say how you know her: "___ and I met when ___."
  3. Tell one story that shows who she is: "The story that sums her up is the time ___."
  4. Turn to the couple and say what you want for them: "Then she met ___."
  5. Give the toast: "Please raise your glasses. To ___ and ___."

Spend most of your time on the story. The night she sat with you in the emergency room tells the room more about her than calling her loyal, kind and beautiful. To learn the beats and rehearse them, see how to practice your wedding speech. For five more speeches on the same beats, see best man speech examples.

5 maid of honor speech examples

The names and stories are made up. Each one is about 220 words or shorter, roughly two minutes out loud. If you're a man of honor, or the couple are two brides, change the names and pronouns. The beats stay the same.

1. For a younger sister

Good evening, everyone. I'm Megan, Lily's big sister. Thank you to Mom and Dad for tonight, and to David's family for making the drive.

When Lily was six, she opened a vet clinic in our backyard. Her patients were a stuffed rabbit, our dog and me. I had to lie on a beach towel while she listened to my heart through a paper towel tube. Then she sent me a bill for a quarter.

She's been taking care of every living thing she meets ever since. She did become a vet. She still sends everyone home from her house with leftovers, whether they want them or not.

The first time she brought David home, Mom's cat, who hides from everyone, climbed straight into his lap and fell asleep. Lily looked at me and said, "Well, that settles it."

David, thank you for taking care of the person who takes care of everyone. Lily, I hope your house is always full of animals and leftovers and people who love you both.

Please raise your glasses. To Lily and David.

2. For an older sister

Hi, everyone. I'm Tess, Nicole's little sister. Thank you to our parents for hosting tonight, and to James's family for coming all this way.

When I was twelve, I had to give a book report in front of my class, and I was terrified. Nicole was seventeen and had much better things to do. Every night that week, she sat on the couch with a timer and a bowl of popcorn while I gave it to her. She clapped every single time, even the night I forgot the name of the book. I got a B. She took me out for ice cream like I'd won an award.

So if this speech goes well, she gets the credit.

The first time I met James, he asked me what Nicole's favorite ice cream was. I said mint chip. The next weekend there were three pints of it in her freezer. He's been paying attention to her ever since.

James, thank you for paying attention to my sister. Nicole, you've cheered me on my whole life, so tonight it's my turn. I hope you two never stop cheering each other on.

Please raise your glasses. To Nicole and James.

3. For a best friend

Good evening. I'm Jess. Sofia and I met at summer camp when we were nine, as the only two kids who couldn't steer a canoe. We went in circles for an hour. Thank you to Sofia's parents for hosting tonight, and to Ethan's parents for all their help with today.

Sofia plans everything. In our twenties we shared an apartment with a kitchen the size of a closet. One December I lost my job a week before Christmas. By the time I got home, Sofia had made a color-coded spreadsheet of my savings, my bills and twenty companies to call. By March I had a new job. She still has the spreadsheet.

On their third date, she showed Ethan her spreadsheet ranking every pizza place in town. Most people would have run. Ethan asked if he could add a column.

Ethan, you're marrying someone who will always have a plan, even on the days you don't. Sofia, thank you for twenty years of plans, and for the one that got me through that winter. I hope you two keep adding columns together for the rest of your lives.

Please raise your glasses. To Sofia and Ethan.

4. Short and sweet

Under 100 words, well under a minute. It fits a night with lots of speeches, or a couple who asked you to keep it brief.

Hi, everyone. I'm Grace, Emma's best friend since our first week of college. Thank you to Emma's parents for tonight. I promised to keep this short.

Emma and I have a standing Sunday phone call. The Sunday after she met Noah, she didn't call. She texted me at seven the next morning: "Sorry. We talked until two." That's when I started writing this speech.

Noah, thank you for being worth the missed call. Emma, I hope you two never run out of things to talk about.

Please raise your glasses. To Emma and Noah.

5. Funny

Good evening. I'm Kim. Zoe and I met at our first job, where we both got written up for laughing during a fire drill. Thank you to Zoe's parents for hosting tonight.

Zoe is the most competitive person I know. She once made a room full of grown adults replay a round of charades because someone "used their eyebrows." She has kept score of every mini golf game we've played since 2017. She's ahead by eleven. I've asked for a recount.

Then she met Marco, who does not care who wins. The first time they played Monopoly, he suggested stopping so they could get to dinner. She asked for one more turn. He ordered takeout.

Marco, thank you for loving her even when she's winning, which is always. Zoe, you finally found someone you don't need to beat. I hope you two stay on the same team for the rest of your lives.

Please raise your glasses. To Zoe and Marco.

The jokes land on Zoe's competitive streak and on the speaker. Marco only gets kind lines, and the speech turns sincere before the toast.

How long should a maid of honor speech be?

Ask the couple, or whoever is running the night, how long you have. If nobody gives you a number, keep it under five minutes. Time it by standing up and saying it out loud, since a speech read in your head goes faster than one said to a room.

If it runs long, cut a whole story rather than a few lines from each.

Compare notes with the best man

A week or so before the wedding, talk to the best man and anyone else giving a speech. Make sure you aren't both planning to tell the story of how the couple met. Then ask the couple or the planner what order you're speaking in.

What to leave out

How to give it

For a day-by-day rehearsal plan, see how to practice your wedding speech. If your voice tends to shake, see how to stop your voice from shaking.

Rehearse your speech with an AI coach in Charisma Lab

Charisma Lab is a speaking coach on your iPhone. In Speak, tap the center and tell the coach you're practicing a maid of honor speech. Say it out loud one chunk at a time, like the opening, the story or the toast. A pause of about two seconds ends a take, so end each chunk where you'd wait for a laugh. You hear the take played back, then the coach tells you what to fix and sends you back in.

For the toast, Train has a drill called The Declarative, open from the start in the Presence and Conviction tracks. It hands you a line like "The project launches Monday." and compares the pitch of your last word with the rest of the line. A take passes when you say at least half the line, including its key word, and your last word comes out more than 5% lower than the average pitch of the other words. Setup is free and includes a short live session with the coach. After that, Speak and Train need Pro, which is $14.99 a month in the US. See pricing.

FAQ

How do you start a maid of honor speech?

Say who you are and how you know the bride, and thank whoever is hosting. Then go straight into your first story. For more ways in, see how to start a speech.

How long should a maid of honor speech be?

As long as the couple asks for. If nobody says, keep it under five minutes, and time it by saying it out loud.

What should you not say in a maid of honor speech?

Skip her exes, the bachelorette party, inside jokes and jokes about marriage as a trap. Tease the bride gently if you like, and say only kind things about the person she's marrying.

How do you end a maid of honor speech?

Say what you want for the couple, ask everyone to raise a glass and say their names last. Then stop talking. How to end a speech has more on toasts.

Who speaks first, the maid of honor or the best man?

There's no fixed order. Ask the couple or whoever is running the night, and compare notes with the best man so you don't both tell the same story.

Can a maid of honor speech be funny?

Yes. Aim the jokes at the bride's harmless habits, or at yourself, and wait after each one so the room can laugh. Then give one sincere line about the couple before the toast.

Can I read my maid of honor speech from my phone?

You can, but a card is safer, since a phone can lock or show a text mid-sentence. Learn your first two sentences and the toast by heart, so you can look at the room for those.

Can I use a maid of honor speech I found online?

Use its shape, then put in your own stories. Her family knows her, and a borrowed story about her falls flat.
