WEDDINGS
How to practice your wedding speech out loud
You get one go at a wedding speech, in front of both families.
AI can draft a toast for you in a minute now. It can't stand up and give it for you. How the speech lands comes down to how you say it, and you work on that by saying it out loud. Here's a routine for the two weeks before the wedding.
Learn the speech as five beats
Write the speech as five beats, one line each. Memorize those, and you have somewhere to go if you lose your place:
- Thank the hosts and say who you are.
- How you know the couple.
- One story about them.
- The serious part: what you want for them.
- The toast.
If you blank on a sentence, you still know which beat comes next, so you can pick it up from there. For whole speeches built on these beats, see best man, maid of honor, father of the bride and mother of the bride speech examples.
Time it before you polish it
Ask the couple, or whoever is running the night, how long you have. Then stand up, set a timer and say the whole speech out loud as if the room is full. That's your real length.
If it runs long, cut a whole story instead of trimming two. If nobody gives you a number, keep it under five minutes.
Three takes a day for the last week
Spread your practice across the last week: three short takes a day.
Take 1: with your notes
Hold your five beats and talk through the whole speech. Stumble, restart, check the page. This take is for the order, so don't judge how it sounds.
Take 2: recorded, no notes
Put the page away and record the full speech on your phone. This is the take you learn from. Play it back and listen for:
- Lines where you sped up. Mark them.
- Fillers like "um" and "you know," and where they bunch up.
- Spots where your voice got tight or quiet.
Take 3: fix one thing
Same speech, one change. If take 2 rushed the opening, take 3 gets a breath before the first line and nothing else. Change one thing per take so you can hear what it did.
Rehearse the opening and the toast hardest
Plan your first 15 seconds, from taking the mic to the end of your second sentence. Know those two sentences well enough to say them while your heart is pounding, and say them out loud every day.
Then rehearse the turn from the story to the serious part. Say the last funny line and stop. Take a breath, then say the serious line slower than feels natural. If the pause feels long, play the take back and hear how long it really was.
End on the toast itself. Raise your glass, say the couple's names with your voice going down at the end, and stop talking.
On the day
Do one full run out loud earlier in the day, in the hotel room or the car. That way you've already said it once that day when you stand up in front of everyone.
Before you stand up, breathe out slowly, longer than you breathed in. Save your drink for after the toast.
Practice it in Charisma Lab
In Speak, tap the center and tell the coach it's your best man or maid of honor speech. Then say it out loud in short chunks, like the opening or the toast. A pause of about two seconds ends a take, and you hear it played back. The coach plans a short session around your speech. It points out what to fix, like a rushed opening or an um before the toast, and sends you back in.
To drill the pause before the serious line, Train's Strategic Pause gives you a line like "The most important thing is... consistency." and times your pauses. Setup is free and includes a short live session with the coach. After that, Speak and Train need Pro. See pricing.
A two-week schedule
- Two weeks out: write it, cut it to the time you were given and turn it into five beats.
- The last week: three takes a day.
- Two or three days out: give it once to one person, standing up.
- The day: one run out loud, then leave it alone.
FAQ
How many times should you practice a best man speech?
Plan on three takes a day for the week before the wedding. You're ready when your recorded takes come out about the same length and you can give the opening without looking down.
How long should a wedding speech be?
As long as the couple asks for. If they don't say, keep it under five minutes, and time it by saying it out loud.
Should you memorize your wedding speech?
Memorize the order and your first and last lines. Keep the five beats on a card for the rest. It's fine to glance at it. For the steps, see how to memorize a speech.
Can I use AI to write my speech?
For a first draft, sure. Then read it out loud and rewrite every line you wouldn't say to the couple's faces. The words have to sound like you.
How do I keep my voice from shaking?
Slow down and breathe out before the lines that matter most. There's more in how to stop your voice from shaking.
